The Red and the Black written by Stendhal is a historical psychological novel in two volumes by Stendhal, published in 1830. It chronicles the attempts of a provincial young man to rise socially beyond his modest upbringing through a combination of talent, hard work, deception, and hypocrisyyet who ultimately allows his passions to betray him. The novels full title, Le Rouge et le Noir: Chronique du XIXe siècle (The Red and the Black: A Chronicle of the 19th Century), indicates its two-fold literary purpose as both a psychological portrait of the romantic protagonist, Julien Sorel, and an analytic, sociological satire of the French social order under the Bourbon Restoration (181430). In English, Le Rouge et le Noir is variously translated as Red and Black, Scarlet and Black, and The Red and the Black, without the sub-title. Tafhim-ul-Quran is a translation and explanation of the Quran by South Asian scholar Abul Ala Maududi. Maududi spent 30 years writing the work; he began in 1942 and completed it in 1972. Tafhim is derived from the Arabic word fahm which means "understanding". Tafhim is a combination of orthodox and modernist interpretation and has deeply influenced modern Islamic thought. It differs from traditional exegesis in several ways. It is more than a traditional commentary on the scripture as it contains discussions and debates regarding economics, sociology, history, and politics. In his text, Maududi highlights Quranic perspective and argues that Islam provides ample guidance in all spheres. Maududi uses the standard technique of providing an explanation of the Quranic verses from the Sunnah of Muhammed, including the historical reasons behind the verses. The Tafhim deals extensively with issues faced by the modern world in general and the Muslim community in particular.
